2026 Spring Rec Softball Season
Here’s a quick overview of our softball program, from minors up to majors, so you’ll know what to expect this rec season.
Important Dates
- Registration opens Friday, January 2nd and closes on Friday, March 6th.
- Intermediate & Majors Softball Assessments are on Saturday, March 14th at AMD School.
- Coaches Meeting: TBD @ Ossining Rec Center
- Opening Day Parade is on Saturday, April 11th at noon.
- On-field practices are expected to start the week of Monday, April 6th.
- End of Season Celebration: Saturday, June 20th
Equipment & Safety
- JCYS will provide each player a jersey, socks and visor, as well as practice balls, game balls and catcher's equipment for each team.
- Players need to provide their own helmet with cage, bat, heart guard shirt, fielding face mask, a fielding glove, rubber cleats and softball bag.
- Please be advised that no jewelry may be worn at practice or games.
Divisions
BASED ON USSSA AGE REQUIREMENTS AS OF SEPT 1, 2025:
Skill development is emphasized at every level. Coaches will teach the skills of throwing, catching, fielding, hitting, and base running.
Minors (8u)
Players born between 9/1/2016-8/31/2019
Intro to softball. Coaches pitch and teams bat through the entire order each inning for the first 4-5 weeks. As the season progresses, hybrid player/coach pitch format introduced, games become gradually more competitive, and teams begin keeping score. 11’’ safety ball used and pitching mound is 30’ from home plate.
Intermediate (10u)
Players born between 9/1/2014-8/31/2016
Competitive softball, but with emphasis on skill development. Player-pitch with coach rescue as needed. Umpires call balls and strikes, and games follow modified GHV rules. Innings are capped at five runs and games are capped at 1 hour 30 minutes. Standings are kept and the season ends with playoffs and a local championship. An 11” regular ball is used and the pitcher’s mound is 35’ from home plate.
Majors (12u)
Players born between 9/1/2012-8/31/2014
Competitive softball with continued skill development. Player-pitch and games follow GHV rules. In this division, team follow GHV rules. Innings are capped at five runs and games are capped at 1 hour 30 minutes. Standings are kept and the season ends with playoffs and a local championship. A 12’’ ball is used and the pitcher’s mound is 40’ from home plate.
Each team has a head coach and assistant coach or 2-3 assistant coaches. Coaches will use GameChanger to communicate with families. Occasionally, coaches may make calls for volunteers to help the team.
Ossining Outlaws Travel Softball
In addition to our recreation teams, JCYS Ossining Softball offers a competitive travel program. Divisions include 8u, 10u and 12u and follow the same age requirements as USSSA. Travel time is generally 15-45 minutes from Ossining. Players must try out. The main tryout is in June/July ahead of the fall season. Subsequent tryouts may occur if the need to add additional players arises. The travel season runs from fall to summer.
